It was a busy weekend for us with the National League matches kicking off. With two of GAA Pitch Locators own (Counties) facing off. Kieran (Armagh) narrowly beating Niall (Fermanagh). But we thought we’d bring you a quick story we promised last week around FINDING RATHLIN PITCH
After seeing a comment on the facebook page about Rathlin GAA pitch word got out that we couldn’t find it after exhausting all our usual avenues. We didn’t take that well.
Then we got an email from Gerry McGlynn (Cheers Gerry):
"No team on the island but our club , Naomh Padraig ( amalgamation of Carey, Cushendun and Armoy at underage) run an annual u12 hurling blitz in August. We bring mobile goals with us and line pitch with cones. Think it is used for soccer most of time hence no GAA posts etc"
So armed with the little information we set out again. This time to find a soccer pitch on Rathlin in order to place the marker there. Again no joy but we did find “Rathlin Island Football Team” facebook page where we spotted Temporary Goals. In the Background was a house with a distinctive colour, shape and a caravan at the side of the house … this was the landmark we would needed.
So armed with our new information and google street view we set about finding this illusive pitch. It didn’t take long was we started at the port did a quick right turn and found the house just up a lane. The same shape, colour and had a caravan at the side just like on the facebook page. A Quick note of the location from streetview co-ordinates and now its on the map.
I’m sure some might not be inclined to include this pitch. But the “mission” of GAA Pitch Locator is to get parents and players to the venue. So we think we’ll keep it.
